The core idea
Metabolism and body-weight change are related, but they are not interchangeable outcomes. FDA's supplement-claim guidance gives an example in which a small short-term increase in metabolism did not adequately substantiate a weight-loss claim.
A better way to evaluate the question
- Define the claim. Identify the actual outcome being promised or implied.
- Match the evidence. Ask whether research studied the same ingredient or product, dose, population, and outcome.
- Check the total picture. Look for conflicting findings, safety limitations, and whether results have been replicated.
- Keep mechanisms in proportion. A biological mechanism is not automatically evidence of a meaningful real-world result.
