How to read a Supplement Facts label

The label is the starting point for checking what a product contains and how transparently it is disclosed.

Health note: Educational content only; not medical advice. Dietary supplements can have side effects and interactions. Discuss personal health decisions with an appropriately qualified professional.

The core idea

Start with serving size, servings per container, each listed dietary ingredient, amount per serving, and other ingredients. Compare what the label discloses with the claims being made elsewhere on the package or sales page.

A better way to evaluate the question

  1. Define the claim. Identify the actual outcome being promised or implied.
  2. Match the evidence. Ask whether research studied the same ingredient or product, dose, population, and outcome.
  3. Check the total picture. Look for conflicting findings, safety limitations, and whether results have been replicated.
  4. Keep mechanisms in proportion. A biological mechanism is not automatically evidence of a meaningful real-world result.
